Selichot

What are Selichot?

Selichot are prayers of forgiveness built around the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, said in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah and through the Ten Days of Teshuvah. Ashkenazim begin on the Motzaei Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah — the first night late at night, and the following days early in the morning before Shacharit. Sephardi and Mizrachi communities say Selichot every day of Elul, usually before dawn. Selichot are not said on Shabbat, and customs differ between communities — follow your own shul.

Day by day

The schedule follows the common Ashkenazi practice: Selichot start on the Sunday before Rosh Hashanah (a week earlier when there would be fewer than four days), skip Shabbat, and continue through Erev Yom Kippur. Any day can be opened from the list.
