Before eating

HaMotzi

Challah, pita, bagel, sliced bread, matzah

Before bread (wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt) — e.g., challah, pita, sliced bread.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, הַמּוֹצִיא לֶחֶם מִן הָאָרֶץ

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, hamotzi lechem min ha'aretz.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

Mezonot

Cake, cookies, crackers, pretzels, breakfast cereal, pasta, beer

Before grains that are not bread (snacks, cakes, cookies, cereals, pasta).

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא מִינֵי מְזוֹנוֹת

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, borei minei mezonot.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates varieties of nourishment.

HaGafen

Wine, grape juice

Before wine or grape juice.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, borei pri hagafen.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine.

HaEtz

Apple, orange, peach, grape, olive, date, fig, banana, cherry

Before fruits that grow on trees or bushes.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָעֵץ

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, borei pri ha'etz.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Creator of the fruit of the tree.

HaAdama

Carrot, cucumber, tomato, potato, lettuce, melon, watermelon, strawberry, mushroom

Before vegetables and fruits that grow directly from the ground.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, borei pri ha'adamah.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Creator of the fruit of the ground.

Shehakol

Water, juice, coffee, tea, milk, eggs, cheese, fish, chicken, meat, candy, chocolate, ice cream

Default blessing for foods that do not have a specific bracha (drinks, candy, eggs, fish, meat, dairy).

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא מִינֵי מְזוֹנוֹת

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, shehakol nihiyeh bidvaro.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, through whose word everything comes to be.

After eating

Birkat Hamazon

Full grace after meals — can be found in the Siddur page

After a meal that included bread (k'zayit of bread).

בְּרֵכוּ אֶת ה' הַמְּבֹרָךְ

Birku et Hashem ha'mevorach.

Bless the Lord, the Blessed One.

Me'ein Shalosh (Al Hamichya)

Cake, cookies, wine, grapes, figs, dates, pomegranates, olives

After grains that are not bread (Mezonot), wine, or specific fruits of Israel.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, עַל הַמִּחְיָה וְעַל הַכִּכָּר

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, al ha'michya v'al ha'kikara.

Blessed are You... for the nourishment and the sustenance.

Borei Nefashot

Fruit, vegetables, water, coffee, snacks with Shehakol

After foods that do not require a full Birkat Hamazon or Al HaMichya.

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה' אֱלֹקֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, בּוֹרֵא נְפָשׁוֹת רַבּוֹת וְחֶסְרוֹנָן

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha'olam, borei nafashot rabot v'cheisronan.

Blessed are You... who creates many living beings and their needs.
